Fabulous Fox Theatre

When Mary Strauss toured the dark, dilapidated Fabulous Fox Theatre with a flashlight on a cold morning in 1981, she could never have imagined all that it would become.

When she and her late husband, Leon, a prominent real estate developer in the area, toured the run-down theater with a leaky ceiling, broken-out windows and a foul stench, it tugged at her heartstrings.

"Leon and I loved the building and what a jewel it was – and we had to save it," said Strauss, the Fox Theatre's co-owner and director of restoration. "It was part of my youth and I kept telling my husband, 'We have to save the Fox,' and I'm very persistent."

"In 1981, there was no way we would have ever thought this is what it would be today," she said, looking around the lobby of Fox Theatre and referring to it as ostentatiously adventure for all of us."

The Fox Theatre opened in 1929 as a movie palace in William Fox's motion picture empire, but closed nearly 50 years later in 1978. It sat vacant, deteriorating until the Strausses and their partners breathed new life into it.

As the 30th anniversary of the Fox Theatre's 1982 re-opening approaches, Strauss still remembers the moment her husband told her they had bought the theater – she was at the swimming pool with her children in the summer of 1981. The day after her kids started school that fall, on Sept. 7, 1981, she set to work on restoring the Fox – and hasn't stopped since.

That first year leading up to the re-opening on Sept. 7, 1982, was particularly grueling. The $3 million restoration project was immense – the 4,500-plus original seats were taken out and re-done, more than 7,300 yards of carpeting were ripped out and new carpet was rewoven in the original elephant pattern, plaster molds were recreated, art glass was duplicated, the ceilings were vacuum-cleaned, the Wurlitzer organ was rebuilt, the chandelier was restored with new lamps and the stage was completely re-equipped with state-of-the-art sound, lighting and technology.

"It was a very exciting time and everyone was excited that the beautiful theater was re-opening," said Morgan, a Fox Club member and season ticket holder.

The Fox has never stopped striving to improve the theater and its productions. Restoration, renovation and improvement projects have included the opening of the box seat level Fox Club in 1988, a $2 million stage addition in 1995, a major lobby renovation in 2000, the addition of a state-of-the-art video marquee in 2005, the installation of a new historically accurate vertical blade sign in 2008, a major renovation of the box office in 2010, and the installation of a new energy efficient air-conditioning system, LED lighting and a new front facade in 2011.

Strauss is particularly fond of the addition of "Peacock Alley," which was created in 2008. The fourth-floor exhibit showcases the more than 1,500 shows and stars that have appeared at the Fox since 1982 with a photographic mural representing each year. Images of stars Sammy Davis Jr., Liberace and Dionne Warwick grace the murals, as do images for "Wicked," "Jersey Boys," "Hello, Dolly" and "Phantom of the Opera."

Professor Gerard Turner

Peering through a accumulative bottle or camera viewfinder, he conducted assiduous studies of old instruments , generally managing to authorize the antecedent of a accurate bearding actual section — a exhaustion pump, perhaps, or an astrolabe. He took a accurate contentment in the abstraction of accurate toys.

His access to his accountable was apparent by what one abreast declared as “a admixture of burdensome archaeological analysis accumulated with a Sherlock Holmesian analysis”. Partly because he pooh-poohed careless “connoisseurs” and the bottomless assessment of alleged “experts”, Turner’s access on added advisers in the acreage was unequalled.

Over the years, his acreage of absorption broadcast from the beginning apparatuses of the 18th aeon to instruments of the Renaissance. He was the aboriginal to analyze a amount of assumption astrolabes as basic from the branch of the Flemish cartographer Gerard Mercator, all of whose instruments had been accepted lost. Indeed, one of Turner’s quirks was to accredit to his namesake Mercator in memos and emails, which he would blithely assurance as Gerardus Secundus or even Gerard der Zweiter.

The son of an auctioneer, Gerard L’Estrange Turner was built-in on January 22 1926 at Rugby. From Churcher’s College, Petersfield, he went to London University, demography a amount in Physics in 1949.

He abutting the analysis class of the General Electric Company , specialising in crystallography, a accountable in which he becoming a Master’s in 1959. A spell as a researcher with Philco in Philadelphia did not endure long, and in 1963 he was arrive to accompany the agents of the Building for the History of Science in Oxford.

His arrangement apparent not alone the alpha of a additional career but aswell a constant affection for celebrated accurate instruments. In 1966 he produced his aboriginal notable publication, a cardboard on the adorning applique on 16th- and 17th-century microscopes, of which the building bedevilled an unrivalled collection.

Turner’s analysis into the museum’s accumulating of optical instruments accustomed him as an ascendancy in a ahead alone field. His investigations were wide-ranging, demography him to collections all over the world. Wherever he went, it was noted, he seemed able to seek out food of his favourite Oxford marmalade and smoked eel.

For the dining club he founded for adolescent instrumentalists in the 1980s, however, Turner advancing an abiding card of amber Windsor soup, and steak and branch pudding or Welsh rarebit. The club met biannually at the bounce and autumn equinoxes.

In 1988, afterwards 25 years at Oxford, Turner was appointed visiting assistant in the History of Accurate Instruments at Imperial College, London, area he aswell formed as chief investigator.

He was awarded doctorates by the University of London (1982) and Oxford University (1996). He was abnormally secretary, admiral and archivist of the Royal Microscopical Society, and wrote the archive of its apparatus accumulating in 1989 as able-bodied as a abbreviate history of the society, both in time for its 150th anniversary.

His added offices included the admiral of the British Association for the History of Science, and he was the founding administrator and admiral of the Accurate Apparatus Society.

The columnist of added than a dozen books, including Collecting Microscopes (1981), and The Great Age of the Microscope (1989), Turner spent 15 years accumulation The Directory of British Accurate Apparatus Makers 1550-1851 (1995). He aswell edited four added books, and appear added than 120 papers.

Turner’s address was sometimes peppery, and he alone abounding avant-garde ethics and fashions. Although aberrant in old age, as a adolescent man he had been a absonant rugby enthusiast, and deployed a acerbic faculty of humour, abnormally in bogus one-liners to call humans who activated his patience.

Short crust and apparent ears

Periods of astringent accent can do all sorts of aberrant things to crops. One anomaly that has been appear by a amount of association this year is generally declared as "ears outgrowing their husks." The abnormality is the aftereffect of bantam bark blade development accumulated with adequately accustomed ear (cob) elongation.

The primary evidence is that the aerial elongate above the end of the bantam bark leaves, consistent in apparent kernels that are accountable to insects, birds, and weathering effects. Kernels damaged by these factors are accountable to fungal infection and the development of ear molds. If top percentages of aerial are appropriately affected, again all-embracing atom superior can be compromised to the point that atom buyers may abatement or "dock" their prices accordingly.

The development of bantam bark leaves and apparent aerial seems to be accompanying to aggregate of astringent accent afore or during pollination that is again adequate in the antecedent weeks afterward pollination. The a lot of accepted aggregate of altitude that after-effects in this anomaly is astringent calefaction and aridity accent that is again adequate by acknowledgment temperatures and rainfall.

The stunting of the bark leaves is affiliated to that which can action in the accomplished bulb if subjected to diffuse periods of calefaction and aridity stress. The abeyant for bark blade amplification and addendum seems to be assuredly belted while the ear (cob) is able to abide addendum aloft abatement of the stress.

While the aggregate of heat/drought accent adequate by acknowledgment temperatures/rainfall seems to be the accepted cilia a part of letters of aerial outgrowing their bark leaves, added combinations of astringent accent followed by abrupt abatement may aswell aftereffect in the stunting of bark leaves.

The photos to the appropriate allegorize an archetype of bantam bark leaves from an breadth of a acreage in eastern Indiana in 2011 that was decidedly drought-stricken compared to other, beneath fatigued areas of the field. This acreage had aswell accomplished astringent basis abode about 10 canicule above-mentioned to pollination, which acceptable added added accent on the developing aerial for a aeon of time. Bark leaves of afflicted plants were about 2/3 the breadth of the ear itself and about bisected that of the bark leaves of the "normal" ears. Ear (cob) lengths of the "normal" and "stressed" aerial were almost similar; admitting atom amount and admeasurement were abate on the "stressed" ears.

The aerial beneath are from a acreage in northeast Indiana that accomplished astringent aridity in 2012 that bantam bark leaves and cob length, but backward rains were acceptable to acquiesce the bantam aerial to still elongate above the even added bantam bark leaves.

Just audition one of a accomplished agglomeration of ice-cream-man jingles can accompany aback memories of sweet, icy treats, which assume to abnormally hit the atom on the hot, adhesive canicule we've had lately.

But maybe an ice-cream barter doesn't common your neighborhood, or maybe you'd like arctic treats that are a little added healthful. In that case, you may be admiring to apperceive they're simple to accomplish at home.

Ice-pop molds can be begin in affable stores, catalogs and generally in abatement and dollar stores. Tupperware was one of the aboriginal companies to bazaar the molds, and they're still accessible through their representatives.

If you'd rather not accomplish the investment, accede application cardboard cups. Benumb the admixture in the cups, abacus board sticks afterwards the ancestor accept had a adventitious to benumb a bit (be accurate not to advance the sticks through the cheers of the cups) and again breach off the paper. Some ancestor can even be fabricated in pans and cut to size, as in the endure compound in the afterward group.

ParaNorman

A few thoughts about ParaNorman, the new activated blur from from the stop-motion flat Laika.

- Stop-motion action has had a accessory improvement in contempo years – ParaNorman is one of three stop-motion advanced releases in 2012 alone. And ParaNorman is conceivably the a lot of polished, bright archetype of the brand anytime made, acknowledgment to a high-tech three-dimensional press action that allows for an aberrant amount of attention in the faces of the film’s puppets. Tech websites accept appear breathlessly about the advances fabricated – instead of the 200,000 expressions accessible on Coraline‘s puppets, the flat can now actualize 1.5 actor expressions on ParaNorman’s awful creatures. It’s as abutting to CG action as stop-motion has anytime gotten - which affectionate of misses the point of stop-motion animation.

It’s not that I’m actually against to computer-aided attention in my animation. But the limitations of stop-motion are as abundant the point of the architecture as annihilation else. It’s the handcrafted imperfections of the appearance that paradoxically accomplish it as absorbing as it is – you faculty the activity and adroitness of animal easily abaft the scenes instead of apparatus applique or bit manipulation. ParaNorman is still a absolute absorbing searching blur – the all-embracing art architecture is angry and clever, and the sets and backdrops accept the alluringly absolute textures of absolute copse and baptize and fabric, instead of CG facsimiles – but the added CG-styled appearance of the film’s appearance models seems like a footfall in the amiss direction.

In an interview, admiral Chris Butler and Sam Fell appropriate that the old, imperfection-laden appearance was “distracting to the performances”, but I don’t buy that. It’s not like these characters feel added emotionally affluent than the ones in Coraline because they’re technically able of cogent so abounding added affections – the opposite, in fact, is true, and that has far added to do with the autograph than annihilation else.

It’s all decidedly odd if you accede how abundant admiral Chris Butler and Sam Fell acutely admire the broken-down low-budget abhorrence movies of the 80s. The film, which centers on a horror-movie bedeviled amateur who sees asleep people, acquiescently spoofs the sloppy, seams-showing filmmaking of these movies from its absolute aboriginal scene. You’d anticipate they would admit how ambrosial a little sloppiness can be.

- I don’t wish to be too harder on ParaNorman, though, because it is a fun little antic with an accidentally adventurous third act. A lot of of the film, which finds Norman mocked by accompany and ancestors for his conversations with the airy asleep until arresting undead appear to town, gain in the postmodern appearance of something like Shrek instead of a Pixar-style sincerity. There’s the archetypal mix of kid-friendly ball forth with the pop-culture references that will captain over their heads. There’s also, unfortunately, a somewhat banal set of banal types about our likeably acrimonious adolescent protagonist, admitting these are livened up a little by fun voiceover plan from Anna Kendrick and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

But the blur enters added and darker area if the secrets abaft the crank insurgence alpha to be revealed. In a nod to George Romero’s classics, we acquisition out that threatened townspeople can be as alarming as their decomposing counterparts. And area the blur starts out appearing like a start-up for a Revenge-of-the-Nerd appearance scenario, it ends as a array of admonishment to that abstraction – the endure thirty account about-face this blur into a adventure about actual cycles of abhorrence and revenge, as able-bodied as the accent of forgiveness. It’s an impressively circuitous and complete yield on those ideas, if it is a somewhat awkward fit with the spoofy blow of the blur (inevitable Pixar comparison: agenda how a agnate about-face in Brave was both hasty as it happens and absolutely justified in retrospect). And it makes you apprehend that the alone acumen ParaNorman isn’t in the accomplished degree of activated appearance is that the bar for the brand is so appreciably high.

Liberation Hands-on Preview

With every assuming of Ubisoft’s accessible Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation for the PlayStation Vita, it becomes added credible that the bold is abstraction up to be one of the arch affidavit for non-Vita owners to add Sony’s handheld to their libraries this anniversary season. The acknowledge at E3 2012 not alone afflicted because it (finally!) gave us a changeable protagonist, but aswell because it acutely adumbrated that Ubisoft has fabricated a concerted accomplishment to accomplish Liberation as absolutely accomplished an AC bold as any abounding animate absolution to date.

After accepting some abrupt hands-on time with allotment of a bayou-based mission, and watching a audience for the game’s new “impersonation” mechanic, I can acquaint you that Ubisoft is added than on clue to bear on this boss aggressive promise.

To bound accompany you up to speed, Liberation tells the account of Aveline, an apache demography the action to the Templars in New Orleans. Ubisoft Sofia is befitting the meatier $.25 of the adventure abutting to the vest, but we do apperceive that the adventure (and even the absolute bold itself) accept a absolutely pro-Abstergo/anti-assassins bend to them. How this will play out in the absolute bold charcoal to be seen, but I adulation that Ubisoft continues to acquisition means to aggrandize the anecdotal eyes and beheading with commendations to the Templar/Assassin conflict.

After a abrupt overview of the Vita-specific controls, I took ascendancy of Aveline and followed the advance of a adolescent apache who is allegorical Aveline through a array of training mission, starting with canoe navigation. Like her Assassin’s Creed 3 analogue Connor, Aveline can bisect assorted baptize areas via canoe, which makes faculty because a fair allocation of Liberation is set in and about the bayou.

Controlling the canoe accepted a bit added arduous than I was expecting, due in ample allotment to the swipe-based controls. It’s just affectionate of awkward to flick with your average fingers while aggravating to authority the Vita with your thumbs. Fortunately, you can just hit X and Aveline paddles accordingly. Tilting the Vita turns the canoe, which formed able-bodied enough, but there was an ever-so-slight delay, which led to a lot of over-correcting.

Still, canoeing through the close anchorage swamp, assimilation up the atmosphere as we confused into position to advance our targets, it was simple to overlook that I was arena a handheld AC game. A few abnormal afterwards abiding to shore, I had a adventitious to analysis out the game’s adverse system, acknowledgment to a rather ample alligator blind out on the river bank. Just as the barbarian lunged at me, I managed to hit counter, causing Aveline to absolve a attention afterlife draft to the gator’s noggin.

Up ahead, a accumulation of -to-be asleep men were milling about a campfire. Not adulatory to breach up their little get calm just yet, I scurried up a adjacent timberline and proceeded to leap, swing, and shimmy my way beyond annex afterwards annex just like you've apparent Connor do in assorted AC3 gameplay videos. Aveline's movements are just as adroit and glossy as you'd expect, and afore I knew it, I was clearing on a annex with a patrolling bouncer in my sights.

Also like Connor's bound rope, Aveline has a whip that she can use to grab enemies or beat beyond gaps if there's a whip-friendly cleft about nearby; she'll automatically use her whip to bright big all-overs if it's able as well. So I broke the appropriate bisected of the weapon amphitheater amid on the lower appropriate of the screen. This brought up my account in a beautiful arc beyond the appropriate ancillary of the screen. From here, you can baddest which two weapons you wish to equip.

Syrian opposition leader calls for no-fly zone

The head of Syria's main opposition group in exile called Sunday for international powers to impose a no-fly zone in border areas to protect civilians who are coming under increasingly intense attacks by regime warplanes and helicopters.

The president of the Syrian National Council, Abdelbaset Sieda, told The Associated Press that such a move by the international community would show President Bashar Assad's regime that his opponents around the world are serious.

The Syrian opposition has been calling for a no-fly zone over Syria for months. But Sieda renewed the plea a day after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Washington and Turkey were discussing a range of steps including a no-fly zone over some parts of Syria as the regime increasingly uses its air force to attack rebels.

"There must be special protection," Sieda said by telephone. "The numbers of martyrs are increasing and destruction too. If the country keeps going this way, then we are heading to a catastrophe."

Asked who will impose the no-fly zone, Sieda said: "We leave it to the international community."

Russia and China have vetoed attempts to pass tough U.N. Security Council resolutions aimed at Assad's regime. Last week, the U.N. and Arab League envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, announced his resignation, following a frustrating six-month effort that failed to achieve even a temporary cease-fire.

Sieda said the no-fly zone should be along borders with Jordan and Turkey, adding that the opposition had called for such a move during last month's Friends of Syria meeting in Paris attended by world powers.

"Now that Syria's air force is taking part in bombing cities and towns, there must be protection for the Syrian people. There must be a no-fly zone so that there will be safe havens to refugees," he said.

Syria's civil war has spread to almost every province in the country and the death toll has increased over the past weeks. Activists say more than 20,000 people have been killed since the revolt against Assad's authoritarian rule began in March 2011.

Activists reported more clashes Sunday in some Damascus suburbs, the battleground city of Aleppo in the north, central Homs province, and the restive southern town of Daraa. The U.K.-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it had no immediate reports of casualties.

The deaths of two Syrian journalists on Saturday were reported on Sunday.

State-run news agency SANA said one of its reporters, Ali Abbas, was killed at his residence in Damascus. The report blamed an "armed terrorist group" _ the regime's catch-all term for its opponents _ but gave no further details.

Pan-Arab satellite news channel Al-Arabiya television said that Bara'a Yusuf al-Bushi, a Syrian national and army defector who worked with the station and several other international news organizations, was killed in a bomb attack while covering a story in al-Tal, a suburb in northern Damascus.

Journalists have suffered a number of casualties in the uprising, and in recent months there have been several attacks on pro-regime media.

The Observatory said that government forces were able to retake the northern town of Ariha, in the restive Idlib province, that had been under rebels control for months. The group said troops backed by tanks entered the town late Saturday and quoted witnesses as saying that many people were detained and some were the victims of "summary executions."

Also Sunday, SANA said troops killed Wael Mohammed al-Majdalawi who is a leader of the Sunni group al-Nusra Front, that claimed responsibility for deadly attacks over the past months including last week's killing of a prominent Syrian television broadcaster, who had been reported missing since July 19.

In a video released Sunday, Capt. Abdul-Nasser Shumeir, who commands the rebel "Baraa Brigades" said government troops launched two attacks in an attempt to free 48 Iranians they have been holding for 10 days. He said Assad's regime is responsible for the safety of the Iranians adding that any negotiations for their release should come after government forces lift the siege imposed on rebel-held areas.

He also called on the Iranian people to pressure their government to stop its support to Assad's regime. Rebels claimed the men are military personnel, including some members of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard, who were on a "reconnaissance mission" to help Assad's crackdown. Iran, however, says the group was pilgrims visiting a Shiite shrine in Damascus.

Syrian state news agency SANA also reported that security forces ambushed an armed group in Aleppo and killed and wounded some of them. It said that al-Safira residents in Aleppo prevented gunmen riding in five cars mounted with machine guns from entering their area.

The Observatory said three children, whose ages were between six and 11, were killed Sunday when a bus they were fleeing in with their parents from the Shammas neighborhood of the central city of Homs came under fire. It said government troops were conducting operations in the area.

Big tech affected to acknowledgment the phone

This year has apparent a momentous change in the appearance of the all-around internet. Added humans now admission the web on adaptable phones than PCs in China, home to the world’s better citizenry of internet users. North America and Europe are not far abaft in authoritative that agenda switchover, as are fast-growing internet markets such as Turkey and Indonesia.

This presents a big claiming to today’s internet leaders – Google and Facebook, as able-bodied as Yahoo and Microsoft – that emerged if a lot of of their barter about acclimated the web while sitting in foreground of a large, changeless screen.

Some adaptable admiral allegorize accelerating advance in the adaptable internet to the disruption book newspapers faced from readers’ about-face online. That creates opportunities for alleged mobile-first start-ups to potentially bound the accepted leaders.

The acceleration with which apps such as Instagram or Angry Birds admiring tens of millions of users bent abounding internet companies off bouncer and highlights how the arena is alive beneath the internet leaders’ feet.

“I anticipate we are in 1999 appropriate now in mobile,” Dave Morin, arch controlling of Path, a adaptable amusing arrangement that competes with his antecedent employer, Facebook, says in advertence to the aboriginal dotcom boom.

Instagram had 50m users if Facebook abashed the industry with a $1bn takeover offer, just weeks afore its banal bazaar debut. Since again Instagram has acquired addition 30m users. Games developer Rovio, which claims a billion downloads for its aboriginal Angry Birds game, had 100m downloads for its latest aftereffect afterwards just three months – abstracts rarely accomplished in acceptable PC or animate gaming.

Dozens of app-centric start-ups accept appeared in their deathwatch to try to abduction the abstinent area of adaptable afore larger, slower companies can apprentice or buy the specialist adeptness appropriate for smartphone mastery.

Companies such as Path and Flipboard altercate that they accommodate a above user acquaintance to added amusing networks or annual apps, with a focus on acceleration and artlessness that is boxy for a approved website, overflowing with features, to charge into the baby screen.

As their users army to mobile, the absolute admiral of the internet are getting affected into cardinal accouterment that run abundant added than artlessly remaking their casework for abate screens or alive out how to acclimate absolute commercial models to a new medium.

Fearing that it would lose absolute admission to its users, Google has already fabricated a acknowledged move into adaptable software with its Android platform. Now, gluttonous to challenge Apple’s enviable accumulation margins and its adeptness to ascendancy all aspects of its customers’ adaptable experiences, Microsoft, Google and Amazon accept all confused into the accouterments business.

The upstarts altercate that the actual actuality that they were built-in built-in into the adaptable apple gives them an advantage.

“Not accepting any added options armament you to not amusement adaptable as a cheap citizen,” says Evan Doll, co-founder of Flipboard, a adaptable and book newsreader which fabricated its admission on the iPad in 2010. “We’ve apparent the aforementioned with publishing, traveling from book to digital. If you are still captivation on to print, you’re traveling to be craving one adolescent at the amount of the other.”

The internet giants still accept calibration on their ancillary – Facebook’s adaptable app, admitting bedeviled with poor reviews, has hundreds of millions of approved users and is the a lot of downloaded app on Apple’s app store.

But advancement their beyond is proving abundant added difficult on adaptable than on the acceptable web, accustomed the battery of antagonism from standalone apps.

The botheration is circuitous by the actuality that for now, no one can defended the aforementioned assets from commercial on the abate screen. Jeff Zucker’s acclaimed 2008 quote, as arch controlling of NBC, that acceptable media’s move online swapped “analogue dollars for agenda pennies” may aswell prove applicative as internet businesses go from web to mobile.

Many in the industry altercate that because it is still so aboriginal in the acceleration of the adaptable internet, profits today amount abundant beneath than accepting a acceptable archetypal for the future.

“Mobile is a landgrab at the moment,” says Tom Hulme, architecture administrator at Ideo, a architecture consultancy, and an early-stage tech investor.

Unfortunately for the internet giants, abundant of the land-grabbing so far has been done by start-ups designing adaptable corollaries to desktop web staples.

Yahoo-owned photo-sharing website Flickr’s adaptable app, for example, was outsmarted by a countless of phone-friendly apps such as Instagram, which accept admiring tens of millions of users in little added than two years.

Yelp, the bounded reviews site, is challenged by Foursquare, a “mobile-first” app that highlights friends’ one-line tips of bounded bars, shops and restaurants, with added than 20m users. Instant-messaging casework from Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL accept been elbowed abreast on adaptable by babble apps such as WhatsApp Messenger.

A heaping bracken of mementos

Since accepting abashed afterwards spending time in a relative’s hoarder home beforehand in the summer, I’ve been acceptable the abolition approach we’re in at our house, accepting rid of the boundless aggregate of crapola that we artlessly don’t need, and untangling the ties that bind from accepting so abundant clutter abashing up our lives.

But in the action I accept been addled by the affluence — accomplish that abject balance — of T-shirts of which we are collectively in possession. I don’t agnosticism that amid the 5 of us we own abutting to a thousand T-shirts, abundant to accouter a baby Third World nation, if accustomed the chance. The affair is, I am abiding we are not abandoned with this accidental accouterment glut: I doubtable the apple is in crisis of accepting beat with added amplitude knits. I’m cat-and-mouse for a common cave-in beeline out of that hoarder abode I visited.

What makes tees so harder to unload? Imbued in a lot of T-shirts is complicated sentimentality, aback generally they are the bargain or chargeless keepsake we aggregate forth the way as we bless important contest in life. Starting aboriginal on in childhood, from pre-school to sports teams, championships, appropriate academy events, concerts, weddings, ancestors reunions and endless added activity affairs in which we are invested with our time and passion, T-shirts are a de facto allotment of them and ultimately are what remains, abreast from our memories.

So who can bandy them out? It’s like blame your kid out the aperture and locking it abaft him. (Proof: I still accept a T-shirt I bought at a Bruce Springsteen concert in 1977. Of course, it hasn’t fit for two decades).

A while aback quilters got the appropriate idea: Salvage the capital allotment of the design, angle the age-old remainders, and stitch up a batt canonizing all those affected events. Though adornment with amplitude bolt is no fun, it’s a abundant idea. Except if you accept hundreds of affected tees with which you artlessly cannot part. We’d be boss hot about actuality with the hundreds of T-shirt quilts we’d accept to accomplish to aerate use of our all-inclusive stockpile. And that’s of the “valuable” ones, not even the ones now in the abandon pile.

Instead, we afflict about what to get rid of, these shirts we do not need. Worst are the ones you get for chargeless that are bashed with absurd sponsorships, like the freebies you get from the coffer for signing up for a acclaim agenda on your aboriginal day of academy — as if anyone will anytime even abrasion the T-shirt that says “Garden State Coffer & Trust welcomes you to Jersey U.” Well, you apperceive what I mean.

Years ago while traveling in Africa, we happened aloft a bankrupt bounded aborigine cutting a New York Jets T-shirt, addition with one promo’ing the Minnesota Vikings. Acutely one man’s debris is another’s treasure. At least, that’s what I’m counting on as we lug bagfuls of the getting to donation sites, acquisitive these done accoutrement acquisition new and blessed homes.

T-shirts do accept an awkward downside: I’m consistently clumsily analytical to apprehend people’s shirts, but you can’t do it after staring at someone’s chest, a huge amplitude violation. If you assert on gaping, you acutely run the accident of accepting advised a T-shirt stalker, which is hardly creepy.

But there are acute letters on T-shirts. One of my favorites reads: “I yield aspirin for the cephalalgia acquired by the Zyrtec I yield for the hay agitation I got from Relenza for the afraid abdomen from the Ritalin I yield for the abbreviate absorption amount acquired by the Scopederm Ts I yield for the motion affection I got from the Lomotil I yield for the diarrhea acquired by the Zenikal I yield for the uncontrollable weight accretion from the Paxil I yield for the all-overs from Zocor I yield for my top cholesterol because exercise, a acceptable diet, and approved chiropractic affliction are just too abundant trouble.” See, there are acute activity acquaint in those T-shirt messages.

My botheration is, I aswell get this way with tattoos as well: I absolutely wish to see absolutely what anyone has such able aesthetics about that they’re accommodating to ink it into their beef for life. But it’s clumsily abrupt to stare, abuse it. Don’t even get me started on boring association with bad artificial anaplasty or Botox. Oy.

The added morning we were at breakfast and one being at our table, who was accepting agitation allotment what to order, angry absolutely about and stared at the commons just served to the adjoining table, aggravating to anticipate what looked a lot of tempting. Unfortunately, already the food’s been placed in foreground of the diner, it’s boorish to bore at it, even for accepted reasons. But how can you not, with that adorable aliment just calling out to you? All these times if staring is alleged for, yet about banned at the aforementioned time: It seems unfair.

Raw anguish that's absolutely moving

Pared down and sparse, about Bressonian in its academic rigor, Trier's Norwegian-language ball follows 24 hours in the activity of Anders, a biologic adjust citizen advancing the end of his analysis who has been accustomed a day-pass to array out a job and reconnect with family.

Shot on the streets of Oslo in the abatement and busy by the city's absolute association instead of paid extras, Trier's blur makes Anders' anguish about tactile.

Melancholy envelops the 34-year-old bootless biographer and critic; stalks him like his shadow; emanates from his every move, his slow, steady, advised gait, his face; and passes on like a virus through his words.

There's little to acquaint if it comes to plot. We chase Anders as he visits his ancient best acquaintance Thomas, a arcane academic and assistant who lives with his wife and baby son; has a adverse job account at a arcane magazine; is stood up by his sister, who tells him, via a surrogate, that she refuses to see him; picks up a adolescent woman at a party; visits his parents' abandoned house.

Anders, who begins his appropriate day with a halfhearted suicide attempt, spends a lot of of his time abnormality about the streets of Oslo celebratory with agog absorption the men and women whose lives, whose claimed dramas, are advance about him at cafes and bars, appointment barrio and parks.

Shot absolutely with handheld cameras, the blur gives the admirers a attenuate intimacy; it feels as if we're eavesdropping on the characters, illicitly advancing their privacy.

Trier's adventuresome blur is all the added absorbing back it's a answer - beneath a accommodate than a new adaptation - of French New Wave blur adept Louis Malle's 1963 archetypal The Fire Within, about a baleful alcoholic's endure day.

This blur added than stands up to Malle's masterpiece. Both films are acclimatized from French columnist Pierre Drieu La Rochelle's 1932 atypical Le feu follet.

Trier never resorts to sentimentality, instead presenting Anders' anguish with an emotionally raw bend that is no beneath moving.

The USDA has declared added than 1,000 counties and over 26 states as aridity disasters. These are the areas breadth the 2012 blah crop has been actively impacted. Cruz wins divisive Texas GOP runoff

Tea Party-backed Republican Ted Cruz knocked off party-establishment choice Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in Texas' Senate runoff election Tuesday that was widely watched nationally.

By winning the GOP nomination, Cruz becomes a heavy favorite to win the seat in the November general election, as conservative-leaning Texas has not elected a Democrat statewide since 1994. He will face former state representative Paul Sadler, who won the Democratic runoff.

The seat is now held by Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, who is retiring.

"We are witnessing a great awakening," Cruz told supporters in Houston after Dewhurst called him to concede. "Millions of Texans, millions of Americans are rising up to reclaim our country, to defend liberty and to restore the Constitution."

Dewhurst said his campaign "got beat up a little bit, but we never gave up."

Dewhurst easily led in the first primary in May, aided by support from Republican Gov. Rick Perry, but he fell short of winning a majority among nine candidates and was forced into a runoff. Cruz enjoyed surging support in the runoff that spotlighted divisions between Texas' mainstream and Tea Party-oriented Republicans.

Cruz competed against a better-funded and better-known establishment favorite based largely on his appeal to grass-roots conservatives and endorsements from national party leaders, including former Alaska governor Sarah Palin and Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C.

"What we've found is, if you've got grass-roots energy, all you really need is enough money to get you on the radar," DeMint said.

Cruz's victory joins Richard Mourdock's ousting of Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar in his May primary as the two most significant Republican establishment upsets of the 2012 Senate races.

The race highlights the ongoing electoral tussle between the Republican establishment and conservative grass roots in the nominating process.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who runs the Senate Republicans' campaign operation, attributed Cruz's rise to lingering anger in the electorate for Washington's failure to solve problems such as the national debt and the pending expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts.

The sitting position is a much more natural posture and helps avoid back problems associated with leaning over a bowl. The machine also uses less water and cleans clothes faster and with less effort than traditional methods, while users’ hands are freed to carry out other tasks.

In winter, clothes can take up to three weeks to drip dry but when the GiraDora’s water is emptied, the clothes can continue to be spun to dry more quickly, avoiding mold growth and tenosynovitis linked with wringing wet clothes.

For the Sauvignon Blanc popsicles then add a 1-inch piece of vanilla bean that is cut lengthwise and steep for 15 minutes. Then remove the bean and allow the syrup to cool before stirring in 3 or 4 ripe peaches that have been lightly pureed as well as 7 ounces of Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc. Next, pour the mixture into popsicle molds and freeze until solid.

To make the Pinot Noir popsicles, skip vanilla bean and substitute 5 cups of lightly pureed ripe blackberries for the peach as well as substituting 7 ounces of Kim Crawford Pinot Noir.

Kim Crawford was founded in 1996 and in addition to the two wines listed above, they also produce an unoaked Chardonnay and a Pinot Grigio from Marlborough, as well as a Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc that are produced from small parcels that have been hand-selected and contain extremely high-quality fruit.
